    Cool Contemplation

June is the start of a sizzling summer. Your flashy painted toes peek out of your strappy sandals, you start wearing your beachy turquoise and coral clothes, and your overall outlook becomes celebratory just because it is summertime. The garden is in, the deck and patio look great, time to chill as the temperatures elevate.

Since it is too hot to do much of anything but keep your cool, here is your chance to plot your next move for world domination. Over the summer, while sipping tea with friends you can get the gang fired up about your next adventure.

Whether you’re plotting a solo mission or you need a crew to accomplish your task, talk with your peeps and work out the details. While the CWF skips July, you don’t have to! You have the directory of our members to augment your personal Rolodex (an archaic term meaning contact list...) and you can reach out to any and all of them.

Your CWF sisters have such an array of talents and experience that a quick phone call or an email is all you need to get the support you seek. But you still want to chill, so remember world domination comes in many categories. Fun is one of them.  You may just want to connect for some giggles which will put you in a better mood to save the world later on.

We will send you off this summer with our Hat Social on June 8 at the New Bern Golf and Country Club. This is also our annual meeting, but we still intend to go out laughing. While you’re at the Hat Social, try to find at least two people you’d like to connect with over the summer pause. And remember... July 1st is the date to renew your membership!

    une 8 CWF Dinner at NBG&CC - Networking 5:00  Dinner 6 pm

In keeping with our literacy charity this year, our annual Hat Social theme is: "Who Do You Literally Love?" You get to select a favorite character or book from a variety of literary genres to represent in your fabulous chapeau! Here are the categories:

Favorite Villain – So bad you rooted for her or him.
Favorite Childhood Book/Character – The one you imagined yourself to be
Favorite Romance Character/Book – This is could be a bodice buster or a prim tale of longtime sweethearts.
Favorite Mystery Book/Character – This one kept you guessing and you resisted turning to the last page to find out who done it!
    Favorite Historical Book/Character
    – Factual or fictional, this is a story that had you time traveling and still sticks with you.
Favorite Non-Fiction Book – It could be your favorite humorist  or your well worn cookbook, a serious collection of poems or a spiritual guide to life, this is your go-to book.

By the way... this is our last meeting of the year. Mark your calendar for dinner on August 1 at the Chelsea and lunch August 16 at NBG&CC.

We are welcoming 5 new members to our group: Jeanine Caldwell, Cassandra Fischer,  our 2017scholarship winner- DeAnne Holliday, Shiela Thompson-Robinson, and Michaelé Watson. Be sure to introduce yourself at the Hat Social.

If you've ever wanted to get up and promote your business or a nonprofit event during the Member Minute, but you just didn't know what to say use the 150 Words technique. Introduce yourself, give three points, contact information and BOOM! you're done! We limit you to a minute so that everyone who has something to say can get a chance. And put away the jitters about getting up in front of the group; everyone wants to hear from you. Also, if you have a plan, then we won't have to cut you off mid sentence.

The Hat Social is FREE to members in good standing. No, we're not tracking how many meetings you've attended to determine your eligibility... but we do have an accounting of what you owe the group for dues and meals. Please pay your balance and then register for this great end of year celebration.

This year our scholarship committee updated the CWF Scholarship to go to a female student over the age of 25  pursuing a degree or certificate at Craven Community College. We are very grateful to Tanya Roberts for pulling all the pieces together and identifying our scholar, DeAnne Holliday.

DeAnne Holliday will be entering the Associates Degree in Nursing (R.N.) program this fall at Craven Community College, in order to attain her lifelong dream of becoming a Registered Nurse.  While she had attended an R.N. program in the mid-1980s, illness forced her to discontinue her studies. Now she has just finally gotten the opportunity to return to school again! After graduating from Craven, she plans to attain a Bachelors’ degree in Nursing from UNC-Wilmington. Her long-term goal is to become a Nurse Practitioner.

One of her passions is providing free or low-cost mobile clinics to serve the rural communities for the uninsured or under-insured.  DeAnne lived in Nevada for four years and witnessed how the Nevada Department of Health sponsored mobile vans to send their teams of healthcare professionals around the State to serve the residents in the small and isolated desert communities. She would very much like to be involved in this type of project in North Carolina so that she can make a positive impact on her...our community.

DeAnne was awarded $2000 through the college, a one year membership with CWF, and the board has voted to host her at any of the meetings she chooses to attend throughout the year. Congratulations!

Charting a New Course!

Like it or not, no matter what your title is, you’re selling something. Some of us are literally selling services or goods. Others may be promoting a non-profit and encouraging people to donate or volunteer. No matter what your role is within an organization, good customer service is vital to keep people coming back. An essential part of growing a business or non-profit is attracting new customers, volunteers and donors. The first word in Coastal Women’s Forum’s tagline is “Networking”. Whether you joined CWF to specifically find new customers or just to meet new women, networking describes how this is done.

I have belonged to many networking organizations during my career – from loose groups who met for breakfast once a month to more formal weekly networking groups such as BNI (Business Networking International). With formal groups, there is a stated structure and exact procedures to follow to get to know other members of the group and to provide referrals to each other. Referrals given and received are tracked, tallied and reported on. While this is not emphasized within CWF, I think we can learn some lessons from these groups on how to network.

First and foremost, we all are a center of influence. We have friends, families, and co-workers that we interact with daily. When we are asked for advice or recommendations for service, who do we recommend? Generally, someone whose service we have used or someone we know who performs that service. As members of Coastal Women’s Forum, we have at our fingertips over 120 women who are resources for many goods and services and represent non-profit organizations. Aside from just checking the directory, how do we confidently recommend our sisters?

There’s another old saying in sales that folks have to “know you, like you and trust you.” And it begins with “know you.” I would like to encourage you to get to know your fellow members in CWF beyond sitting together at our daytime and evening meetings. In BNI we were expected to participate in “one-on-one’s”. These were meetings outside the group meetings between two members. We even had suggested questions to ask each other to facilitate learning all about each other and our businesses. What could happen if you made a commitment to ask one person to coffee that you met at CWF? What if you met with one person a month? At the least you’d learn more about each other, you might even gain some new business, or even better, you may make a new friend.

In January, our program coordinators have designed our meetings around Getting to Know You so that you will have an opportunity to learn more about your CWF sisters. Besides being a lot of fun, we’ll learn more about each other and I encourage you to be on the lookout for someone that you just might want to get to know a bit better!

Let’s have coffee,

Upcoming Events

As Coastal Women’s Forum continues Charting a New Course, we’ll start the new year by getting to know our sister travelers!

Coastal Women’s Forum will celebrate 2022 with Getting to Know You networking programs in January. We have welcomed several new members this program year and many of our members have embarked on new paths since they joined the Forum. The January daytime and evening meetings will feature different networking activities and provide the opportunity to get to know our Coastal Women’s Forum sisters a little better.

Please plan to join in these fun celebrations. The meetings will also be great opportunities to welcome guests and introduce them to our wonderful Coastal Women’s Forum sisters! We look forward to seeing you in January for the beginning of a great 2022!
