    President's Message

The Possibility to Smile, Declutter, and Be Kind

As the days of summer continue, I thought it might be hard to sit down and write this month’s newsletter. But lo and behold, I took my laptop outdoors and sat on my back porch with some unsweetened tea and got inspired, so here we go!

Did you know that the first week of August is “National Simplify Your Life Week?” It was developed to encourage us to refocus our lives and declutter. While this can pertain to physical objects and tidying up the office or your home, the idea is to eliminate anything that causes you stress or anxiety. I know that we can all relate to that lately!

In today’s busy world, many of us are saturated with the stress of psychological overload making it hard for our minds to be at rest.
Research has shown that meditation is one easy way to combat the effects of daily stress, take back control of your life, and declutter your brain. It’s possible to learn something new in just a few minutes a day. It can reduce stress and help your brain recharge. It might be hard for some, but as you continue to include meditation into your life, it gets easier and you will find yourself being able to meditate for more than just a few minutes. I’ve tried this, and it works!

The second week of August is “National Smile Week.” There are plenty of benefits to smiling including affecting your overall well-being. Remember to smile a lot every day—there is a strong possibility that it’s good for your health!

“Be Kind to Humankind Week” is the last week of August (25-31). This is a global celebration that encourages us to reflect on what we can do to make the world a better place. We should all strive to do this every day!  And yes, let your friend know a tag is sticking out of the top of her blouse! The possibilities of ways to show kindness are endless.

As we head into the month of August, remember to declutter, smile, and be kind! I look forward to seeing you at our virtual kickoff evening meeting August 4. We have a dynamic speaker lined up, so you don't want to miss it!

    All my best,

    Rose MacNeal

    Leadership

What a time we are living in. Uncertain how long our restricted lives will be necessary, we are tasked with figuring out how to move forward and plan for the future. As a board we have discussed, fretted, and then determined how CWF, an organization built on human connections, can best move forward.

For as long as the Governor directs us to refrain from large group gatherings, CWF will have one meeting per month. This monthly meeting will be virtual. Our meetings will continue to provide a dynamic speaker as well as opportunities to engage with each other. We believe virtual meetings will enable us all to safely continue creating important connections.

With one virtual monthly meeting, our Dessert Sponsor will become our Virtual Meeting Sponsor. If you are interested in being a sponsor for an upcoming meeting, please email Nelda at nelda.coats@movement.com. Sponsorships are available on a first come, first serve basis so don't delay!

We appreciate the patience of all our members, and we will keep you apprised of changes as they occur.

Hope to see you August 4th!

    CWF Board of Directors

Charting a New Course!

Approaching Thanksgiving, our hearts turn to gratitude and treating others with kindness. During December, we are given many opportunities to give back to our community through donations to community organizations, service charities, sponsoring children for Christmas gifts, and on and on. Many religions celebrate significant days in December – from Hanukkah to Christmas to Kwanzaa and others I’m sure I’m not aware of! All emphasize the importance of supporting our community through our service, support, and giving financially.

December is traditionally the month that Coastal Women’s Forum allows the President to present her charity for the year and request donations to show our support as an organization. In the October newsletter, I introduced you to Sound Rivers. Sound Rivers is a nonprofit organization that guards the health of the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico River Basins. They unite with concerned citizens to monitor, protect and preserve the watersheds covering nearly one quarter of North Carolina. They do this through water protection, community engagement, and pollution reduction. Their mission statement is to monitor and protect the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico River watersheds covering nearly one quarter of North Carolina, and to preserve the health and beauty of the river basin through environmental justice.

There are many ways we can support them – monetary gifts, volunteering, participating in a river clean-up, and promoting them through your social media. I’m excited to hear from Corinne Belch, Director of Development and Katy Hunt, Lower Neuse Riverkeeper, at our December meetings, where they will educate us on their work and how we can become involved in keeping the beautiful Neuse River healthy and flourishing for years to come.

There is a link under President’s Charity on our website where you may read more about Sound Rivers and how to donate. If you wish, you may bring your checks and cash to the December meetings and donate directly there. Make your check payable to Sound Rivers.

Thank you for all you do in supporting our community.

Fondly,

DECEMBER MEETING SPEAKERS

Welcome, Sound Rivers!

Sound Rivers is a nonprofit organization that guards the health of the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico River Basins. Sound Rivers unites with concerned citizens to monitor, protect and preserve the watersheds covering nearly one-quarter of North Carolina.

Founded in 2015 with the merger of two of the state’s oldest grassroots conservation organizations, Sound Rivers combines the deep history of advocacy of the Neuse River Foundation, established in 1980, and the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation, established in 1981. This union to become Sound Rivers creates a powerful advocate protecting North Carolina’s most cherished waterways.

Donations to Sound Rivers support all these programs, and giving means Sound Rivers Riverkeepers can continue working for our clean water. Together, we can make a clean water future possible!
