Donna Marshall, Craven Literacy Council

Craven Literacy Council is a volunteer-based provider of adult literacy instruction. Join us to hear Executive Director Donna Marshall discuss how, for 25 years, CLC has been changing lives of families in Craven, Jones, and Pamlico counties by providing adults with a place to establish and enhance basic reading and writing skills. In recent years, CLC has also developed a curriculum to teach non-native speakers English as a Second Language. Individualized learning plans for adult learners are utilized, supplemented by instruction with small groups and specialized class instruction.

CLC has over 125 specially trained volunteer tutors certified by ProLiteracy, 10 other volunteers, and over 200 students. Tutors and students meet once or twice a week to work on reading, writing, and speaking skills. Each student receives an individualized curriculum based on his or her unique ability and goals. Most students are actively employed in the local labor market and are learning to be even more productive individuals, workers, parents, and citizens.
