    May I...?

When we were kids there was a game called “Mother, may I...?” where whomever was “Mother” would grant, adjust, or reject your request to move forward on the playing field. The point of the game was to create suspense while having the contestants move awkwardly with baby steps, regular steps, or giant steps toward (and sometimes away from) their goal. This is a case of sport imitating life.

When you come up with a new idea or goal, there is always an internal conversation. It might be just a millisecond or it can last months and years as you try to move forward. Simple things like selecting your breakfast beverage don’t need a huge amount of consulting, but tackling something personally or professionally that is outside of your cozy life box will start the chatter.

“Mother” may answer with encouragement or disdain. She may question your ability to achieve this new goal or wonder why such a thing is necessary. She may insist that you immediately take giant steps only to be followed by a holding pattern of baby steps that keep you inches from your goal. Or she may even deny you the opportunity entirely.

However, unlike the kids on the playground, you don’t have to listen to her. You can use your selective hearing to find the words and means that will spur you on while assessing the value of the concerns and options “Mother” may raise.

As Mother Nature refreshes the landscape in May we are invigorated to tackle new things. So if you get an urge to make a change or start an adventure, you don’t have to ask “Mother, may I?”— just do your happy dance and go for it.

This month we have two speakers who focus on the end result. At the Chelsea for dinner on May 2, Elizabeth Wood will talk about how “Who Do You Know...?” changed her life. Then at the New Bern Golf and Country Club luncheon on May 19, Eileen Nonemaker will teach us the power of “No!” While you’re sitting with your tablemates ask them how “know” and “no” may have played a part in their success.

    May 17  Luncheon at the NBG&CC - Networking 11:30  Lunch 12 Noon

    SPEAKER:  Eileen Nonemaker, Paradigm Associates
    You CAN say "NO!"

We, as women, are brought up to be nurturing and helpful.  We often worry more about others then we do ourselves.  This in turn causes us to say "yes" to things;things we should not really be involved in. But, how do we say "no" if it's not in our vocabulary? Join us as we hear Eileen offer us tips on the why and when of saying "no", as well as saying "no" nicely, professionally and without guilt.  (However, you have to say YES to coming to the meeting to hear her!)

May 1st: BE KIND TO ANIMALS/NATIONAL PET WEEK

I’ve loved animals since I was a child. My parents and trainers taught me:

    • “Hands mean only kindness.”
    • “Training develops a strong bond with your dog.”
    • "Consistency, patience and practice will always show through to the judge.”

These traits are critical and are why we say, “Where your critters count!” Crockett’s Critter Care can enrich your pet’s day with a dog walk while you are at work or a vacation sit when you are away. Happy Pet, Happy Home.

Jeanne Crockett is a certified pet sitter through Pet Sitters International, trained in Pet First Aid/CPR, insured and bonded, background check passed and is the first Certified Fear Free Professional in New Bern. ACTIVATE YOUR STRATEGIC PLAN

Whether you own a business, serve on a nonprofit board or guide an agency, planning is on your "to do" list. An essential component of any planning process is a partner document - an Action Plan.  That guides how and when do we do what we need to do to be successful.

But how you develop strategic (or business) plans with management action plans may be a struggle.  It's hard to develop plans when the business or management of the nonprofit or agency is a 24/7 responsibility.

I offer my expertise as one who developed and implemented communication and marketing plans for small businesses, and was a successful leader of local, national and international nonprofits.

Contact me.  Let's have a conversation about your goals and what assistance you need to move forward. It's not "brain surgery", but planning is important to you.  And, I'm here to help.  Carrie.Gallagher@gmail.com.

    SELF REFLECTION WORKSHOP

This workshop is an exploration of how a simple shift in your perception away from fear towards love can lead to miraculous transformations inside and out. Each week, supplemented by guided meditations and in-class journaling, we'll use the lessons from “A Course in Miracles” as prompts for self-reflection and a candid discussion on how to practically apply these theories to your life.

We’ll explore the limiting beliefs that might be blocking you from what you most desire- whether that be more loving relationships, healthier habits, more opportunities, deeper fulfillment or all of the above. You’ll also be guided on how to fearlessly step into your authenticity and become a magnet for love and abundance.  Contact Michelle Pascetta for additional information.

“Nothing happens until someone sells something.”

~Attributed to Henry Ford

President's Message

Nelda Coats

Charting a New Course!

Like it or not, no matter what your title is, you’re selling something. Some of us are literally selling services or goods. Others may be promoting a non-profit and encouraging people to donate or volunteer. No matter what your role is within an organization, good customer service is vital to keep people coming back. An essential part of growing a business or non-profit is attracting new customers, volunteers and donors. The first word in Coastal Women’s Forum’s tagline is “Networking”. Whether you joined CWF to specifically find new customers or just to meet new women, networking describes how this is done.

I have belonged to many networking organizations during my career – from loose groups who met for breakfast once a month to more formal weekly networking groups such as BNI (Business Networking International). With formal groups, there is a stated structure and exact procedures to follow to get to know other members of the group and to provide referrals to each other. Referrals given and received are tracked, tallied and reported on. While this is not emphasized within CWF, I think we can learn some lessons from these groups on how to network.

First and foremost, we all are a center of influence. We have friends, families, and co-workers that we interact with daily. When we are asked for advice or recommendations for service, who do we recommend? Generally, someone whose service we have used or someone we know who performs that service. As members of Coastal Women’s Forum, we have at our fingertips over 120 women who are resources for many goods and services and represent non-profit organizations. Aside from just checking the directory, how do we confidently recommend our sisters?

There’s another old saying in sales that folks have to “know you, like you and trust you.” And it begins with “know you.” I would like to encourage you to get to know your fellow members in CWF beyond sitting together at our daytime and evening meetings. In BNI we were expected to participate in “one-on-one’s”. These were meetings outside the group meetings between two members. We even had suggested questions to ask each other to facilitate learning all about each other and our businesses. What could happen if you made a commitment to ask one person to coffee that you met at CWF? What if you met with one person a month? At the least you’d learn more about each other, you might even gain some new business, or even better, you may make a new friend.

In January, our program coordinators have designed our meetings around Getting to Know You so that you will have an opportunity to learn more about your CWF sisters. Besides being a lot of fun, we’ll learn more about each other and I encourage you to be on the lookout for someone that you just might want to get to know a bit better!

Let’s have coffee,
